ITALIAN COMMEMORATIVE
PEACEKEEPING CROSSES
Italy has a long history of peacekeeping activities throughout
the world. Italian forces have participated in numerous UN missions as
well as other sub-regional peacekeeping efforts in Somalia, the Balkans,
Afghanistan and Iraq. In conjunction with these missions, Italy has issued
a sometimes confusing series of crosses (and one medal) as well as several
distinct ribbon combinations. In some cases the medals are issued with
bronze (silver in the case of Afghanistan) bars to denote the specific
mission. For earlier missions, the planchet was engraved with the name
of the mission. The following chart is as complete as possible based on
the information available to me as of September 1, 2006, but I am always
open to additions/corrections as new information or bars may become available.
